Apple ProRes Bitrate & Storage Reference (1080p 24fps)
Intra-frame 10-bit| Codec Flavor | Video Bitrate | Storage / Hour | Recommended Workflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple ProRes 422 HQ | 220 Mbps | 99 GB | Master Delivery / VFX |
| Apple ProRes 422 | 147 Mbps | 66 GB | Standard Timeline Editing |
| Apple ProRes 422 LT | 102 Mbps | 46 GB | Broadcast / Archival |
| Apple ProRes 422 Proxy | 45 Mbps | 20 GB | Offline Rough Cut |
Intra-frame vs Inter-frame
Unlike H.264/HEVC which compress groups of pictures across time, ProRes compresses each frame individually (intra-frame). This eliminates timeline lag during scrub and color grading, but requires significantly higher bitrates.
Proxy Editing Sweetspot
Generating ProRes 422 Proxy clips allows smooth 60fps playback even on laptops with slow internal storage, while taking up only ~30% of the space of full ProRes 422.
